Good Night Chickies

Our coop door didn’t open this morning, for reasons unknown (battery was good, sensor had the correct numbers for light and dark), so tonight Katie and I went to check to see that it had closed (it had), and we peeked in the side door.

We’d never looked in at night before.  All on one bar, so I guess there’s room for more—on the longer one across the other side of the coop! 😉

Chickies

So if you move out to the country, you’re supposed to raise your own laying hens, right?

Ellie and I went to get some tiny little chicks

We set them up in a tub, water, feed, heat plate, and all in the laundry room.

There they grew and grew

So they were promoted to a dog pen

In the mean time Justin and Nate were hard at work

They put together a coop

And a large run

Here is a chick visiting before we got their door installed

A waterer that they can’t foul! Every day had been a clean out job before this!

Chickie with the Chickie

The finishing touches are still going into the run, but they and we are glad they are outside.

Chickies

One of the draws to moving out of the city was to do minor homesteading.  We’ve been promising the kids chickens the whole time, and now is when it’s easy to get baby chicks, so it was time.

Ellie went along with me.  We got 4 Isa Browns and planned to get 4 Americunas, but some how got home with five—the fellow at the store who picked them out for us must have made a mistake!

The little fuzz balls like the brooder plate.  We had them in the garage with a space heater nearby and a thermometer to monitor the temperature during the day, but we pulled them in to the laundry room at night so we didn’t need to keep checking to be sure they were warm enough.
