In the Storm

Like many across several states, we woke sleeping children, a dog, and a Guinea pig, and huddled in our lowest interior space in the early hours of last Saturday morning.

As the winds blew loudly, the lights went out, and I quit using my phone, which had been discharging quickly as we watched the weather report.  The storm passed us and we went to bed.  I thought of my family, ninety minutes north, but didn’t check in.  They often don’t get up with storm alerts.

Early the next morning, power still out, as I was getting ready for the day, one of my aunts checked in on us, and to see what her son (who lives relatively close) might find when he headed home.  Then she mentioned she had seen my mom’s post.

I quickly went to Facebook and found out about the damage in my hometown.  They were okay, the house was damaged.  As the morning went on and pictures were coming in, I sat with our solar phone charger, and we saw more and more of the damage to their home, but much more than that, to the neighbors.

One of the new stations flew over the path, and their home was right there, just on the outskirts of the main line.  We are so blessed, so thankful.  God still has work for them to do, and we get to keep them.  Not only that—their house, while banged up, is usable.  And as of yesterday, they even have power again.

Many of their neighbors have lost so much.  We are grateful for volunteers who brought meals, are cleaning up debris, patching roofs, and supplying necessities.  And praying for those who need literally everything replaced, and for the loved ones of those who were lost, and can’t be.

Old Recipes

I never could get my Grannie to write down a recipe for her fried apple pies.  I could watch her make them, she told me.  I did, and in the fall, I make them—still without a recipe.

We have some of Grannie’s old recipes here, and in the hunt for something to make yesterday, Gabby pulled out the cards. She happened across a recipe for jam cake—it’s one of the few in the box that I actually remember her making, most of her recipes were of that fried apple pie variety.  She often jotted down recipes that she must have only tried once or didn’t make for the family dinners on Sunday afternoons.

The ingredients list wasn’t a problem, so Gabby got to work.  Then she came to me with a question, “It says bake in a cool oven.”

There was no temperature and no time.  I had her set the oven to 325* and check it after 45 minutes—it wasn’t long enough.

Later she came back with a question about the filling/glaze.  It called for ‘butter the size of an egg.’

I guessed 4 Tablespoons, reasoning that is about the right size.  I assume Grannie had been scooping butter or margarine from a tub instead of using sticks.

It was fun to see the recipe and Sherlock Holmes the meanings.

It turned out well too.

Cake:

2 cups buttermilk

2 1/2 cups flour

1/2 cup butter

1 cup jam or preserves

1 cup raisins (Gabby subbed coconut, as we had it on hand)

2 teaspoons (baking) soda

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon allspice

2 teaspoons cocoa

2 cups of sugar

Cream butter and sugar.  Add buttermilk, soda, spices, and jam.  Add flour a little bit at a time.  Stir in raisins. Bake in low oven. (Gabby did 325* for about an hour)

Filling (Glaze):

1 1/2 cups sugar

6 Tablespoons coffee

Butter size of eggs (4 Tablespoons)

Boil until thick.  May add nuts & raisins.

A Bit Lately

We’ve had a lot going on around here!

Gabby and some friends played with makeup! 😮. She’s been working with some friends on both the Pet Care and Money Management badges with some friends. After they finished up one evening, they had some fun.

Lucy was spayed.

Our family was able to light the first Advent candle at church.

We learned about Purim and made cookies to share with our friends.  We decided our friends live entirely too far apart, as we were dropping things off all over creation!

Ellie was asked to walk Brandy (the dog) down the aisle at a friend’s wedding next fall.  Brandy, who was originally socialized to be a seeing eye dog (but was not able to pass some of the requirements), so she is such an amazing dog, will be the ring bearer.

And these gals were asked to be bridesmaids.  They are so excited.

Ellie lit the joy candle in Children’s church.

We looked at the planets by telescope

I took Ellie out for cocoa and to have the Santa talk.

There were lots of unusual activities, like outdoor Christmas parties this year.  Masked events.

Ellie picked out a dress for the wedding, and had some fun with photo editing.

A puzzle over our Christmas break.
